Description
Devils Dyke in the South Downs National Park in southern England. So called as local folklore states that this steep sided downland combe was dug by the devil with the intention to extend the ditch to the sea nearby and so let the water in to flood all the churches in the Sussex Weald. It is said that the devil mistook a woman carrying a candle, for a new dawn and quickly disappeared leaving his work unfinished. The concrete outcrop is all that remains of a cable car facility built in the Victorian era across the valley to attract and entertain visitors (30,000 people were recorded as visiting on one day in 1893).
